PSI doesn't guess at "football IQ." It measures cognitive performance using the same statistical foundations that power the SAT, GRE, and military ASVAB — calibrated for what happens between the lines.
Foundation
PSI is built on Item Response Theory (IRT) and computer-adaptive testing (CAT) — the same statistical foundations used in the SAT, GRE, and military ASVAB. These methods allow each assessment to dynamically adjust difficulty based on the athlete's responses, producing precise ability estimates with fewer items and less time.
Unlike generic cognitive tests, every item in PSI is designed around football-specific cognitive demands. The stimuli, timing constraints, and decision contexts mirror what athletes actually face on the field — pre-snap reads, coverage recognition, play-action discipline, and broken-play adaptation.
The result: a reliable, standardized measurement of how an athlete's brain performs under football conditions, not a lab simulation.
Core Measurement
Each domain isolates a distinct cognitive ability critical to football performance.

Identifying meaningful patterns from partial or noisy data.
Selecting the correct option within a time constraint when stakes are high.
Maintaining and manipulating multiple pieces of information simultaneously.

Tailored Assessment
Each position faces different cognitive demands. Each PSI test is tailored to measure what matters most for that role.
Emphasizes decision speed, working memory, and anticipation. The most cognitively loaded position gets the most comprehensive battery.
Emphasizes inhibitory control, sustained attention, and communication processing. Measures the discipline and awareness that separate elite linemen.
Emphasizes reaction speed, inhibitory control, and pursuit calculation. Tests the explosive decision-making that creates disruption.
Emphasizes pattern recognition, gap responsibility processing, and run/pass read speed. The defensive brain of the field.
Emphasizes anticipation, route recognition, and spatial awareness. Measures the coverage instincts that produce turnovers.
Emphasizes coverage reads, route adjustment speed, and spatial processing. Tests how fast a receiver adapts to what the defense gives.
Emphasizes hole recognition, pass protection reads, and vision processing. Measures the ability to see and exploit lanes in real time.
Extended Assessment
Available in Pro and Elite tiers — additional cognitive dimensions beyond the core 6 domains.
Measures mastery of NFL, NCAA, and NFHS rules. Players who know the rules exploit them — delay of game awareness, substitution strategy, penalty avoidance.
Timed visual processing of offensive and defensive formations. How fast can you identify personnel groupings and predict play tendencies?
Glossary mastery and strategic concept understanding. From basic terminology to advanced scheme comprehension.
Tendency recognition and EPA-based decision assessment. Can the athlete process game-theory concepts and make statistically optimal choices?
Measurement
PSI Score Scale
Percentile rankings compare each athlete against others at the same position and competitive level. A QB's score is benchmarked against other QBs, not against linemen.
PSI Scores are NOT IQ scores. They measure football-specific cognitive performance — how your brain handles the unique demands of football. A high PSI Score means your cognitive profile is well-suited to your position's demands. It is not a measure of general intelligence.
PSI is actively collecting normative data and conducting validation studies correlating cognitive scores with on-field performance metrics. Published results forthcoming.
